At Beth Numeyer Counselling, I'm proud to offer compassionate, person-centred support for individuals, parents and families across Maitland, Telarah, Newcastle, the Hunter Valley and surrounding areas. As an experienced counsellor with over 25 years of experience working with children and families, I bring multiple qualifications to my practice, including a BA in Psychology, a Graduate Diploma in Counselling and a Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy, as well as accreditation as a Family Group Conferencing (FGC) Facilitator for families within the child protection system (subject to approval by the Department of Communities and Justice).

I understand that everyone's situation is different, which is why I take the time to genuinely listen, creating a safe space where you can feel comfortable sharing what's on your mind. My approach as a counsellor is built on care, respect and understanding, so that whether you're navigating life changes, family challenges or emotional stress, I can provide counselling that suits your needs. I offer in-person sessions in Telarah and home visits throughout the Hunter Valley region, as well as convenient telehealth options for those further afield.

I believe counselling should feel approachable, which is why I guide you through each step with clarity and genuine support, helping you feel more confident as you move forward. Frequently Asked Questions

  • What happens in a typical counselling session?

Sessions usually involve talking through what's on your mind in a private, confidential setting. Your counsellor will listen, ask questions to better understand your situation and work with you to explore feelings, patterns or challenges you're facing. There's no set formula, since each session is guided by what you need at the time.

  • How many sessions will I need?

This varies from person to person. Some people find a handful of sessions enough to work through a specific issue, while others benefit from ongoing support over a longer period. Your counsellor can help you figure out a plan that suits your circumstances as you go.

  • Is counselling confidential?

Yes, counselling is confidential. What you share stays between you and your counsellor, with a few important exceptions required by law, such as if there's a risk of harm to yourself or others or in situations involving child protection concerns. Your counsellor will explain these limits clearly before you begin.

  • Do I need a referral to see a counsellor?

No, you don't need a referral to book a counselling appointment. You can reach out and make an appointment directly whenever you feel ready.

  • What's the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?

Counselling generally focuses on specific issues or challenges and tends to be shorter term, while psychotherapy often looks more deeply at long standing patterns, past experiences and emotional wellbeing over a longer period. Many practitioners draw on both approaches depending on what best supports the client.
